ALIEN Series Music

Quick Jump : Alien | Aliens | Alien 3 | Alien Resurrection | AvsPr | Trilogy | Misc

Music in the Alien films helps create an atmosphere, convey emotion, and help immerse the audience into the actions and predicament of the characters on the screen. Each film in the Alien series has a distinct musical signature. Also, each film has had the music released on official soundtracks, or bootlegs, helping the fans relive the same emotions that they once experienced in the theatres. If you have any additions or comments, please email me.

Jerry Goldsmith picture Jerry Goldsmith is one of Hollywoods most prolific and best known composers; having scored hundreds of projects ranging from film, television, and projects. His music has been has been nominated several times for 'best score' at the Academy awards. ALIEN is an odd score, with traditional orchestrations and some electronic synth. ALIEN is considered to be one of Jerry Goldsmith's best works, and this score has was nominated for a BAFTA, Grammy, and a Golden Globe. Although the theatrical film release did not use all the original music where originally intended, Goldsmith created a rather unique musical landscape for the crew of the Nostromo. A more "complete" soundtrack, better representing all the music found in the film, can be found on several bootleg recordings, some of which are based on the daily recording session takes. The ALIEN Movies Resource was the first to present the tracklisting of some of these bootleg releases.
[I would like to extend my warmest gratitude to Moritz.]

 - Excerpts from "Symphony no. 2 (Romantic)" written by Howard Hanson.
 - Excerpts from "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
 - A few parts of the score from the movie ' Freud', also composed by Jerry Goldsmith. This can be heard in the 'Shaft seuence' scene with Dallas, another is the blood spilling from the face hugger, and the last cue is when Ripley is searching for Jones just before Parker and Lambert are killed.

 - Album Title: "ALIEN - Banda Sonora Original del Film y Temas Rechazados" ["ALIEN - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack & Rejected Themes"] - Music by: Jerry Goldsmith (& others).
 - Release Date: 1999.
 - Edition Details: Double audio-CD, limited edition (500 units, serial number hand written) celebrating the 20th anniversary of ALIEN, 46 cues total, AAD.
 - Booklet Includes: Movie stills, introduction, commented index, etc. (texts in Spanish).
 - Transparent double CD case, single-size.

This rare double-CD offers, for the first time, the true and complete Original Motion Picture SOUNDTRACK of ALIEN (this is, not only the score, but all the music present in the movie) in the first disc. The second one contains all themes rejected in the final print by filmmakers (what does not mean, by the way, poorer musical level). Some marks like "Weyland-Yutani Music" in its credits, reveals the "bootleg" condition of this release, unusually well conceived & documented. dio quality ok, though minimal background hiss present. Integral tracks perfectly edited, no unexpected cuts. Covers, booklet and discs properly printed. About Mr. Goldsmith^s music... What can I say, not said before, about this UNIQUE masterpiece?
Maurice's Verdict: A jewel for collectors!

The 1999 LEGACY DVD release of ALIEN contains a second audio track consisting of Jerry Goldsmith's score as it was originally intended to be used in the film. Here now, based on a recent post to the rec.music.movies newsgroup, is a track listing I have come up with using the original tracks and other alternate cues found on other second audio tracks of the DVD, should you decide to make a CD-R of the score for yourself. Please note that some of the track titles are different from those found on the other soundtrack issues. And I have also listed an approximation of where these cues can be found on the DVD where possible.

Aliens Music Jump : Official | DVD | Bootleg

James Horner picture James Horner wrote the music for Aliens. Horner is one of the best known and most prolific film score composers. Horner trained at the Royal College of Music in London, England, and received a bachelor's degree in music at USC; eventually getting his master's degree at UCLA. He later completed his Ph.D. in Music Composition and Theory at UCLA. He started his career by composing for student films, and moved on to low-budget Roger Corman movies. His first big break was when he was given the composing duties to 'Star Trek 2 : The Wrath of Khan' and horner has not slowed down since. The score to Aliens was nominated for an Academy Award, Grammy, and a Golden Globe for best score, despite the fact that Horner has stated he is generally upset with it. In fact, he was given under 2 weeks to compose this music, and the theatrical version of Aliens did not use the intended cues on the right scenes.

As proof of the popularity and the effectiveness of Horner's music, several tracks are used extensively in many movie trailers, even up to this day. The next time you are in the theatres, watching previews for upcoming action movies, make sure to listen to the music in the background....there is a good chance it will be from Aliens!

6.Futile Escape.(8:13)
7.Dark Discovery.(2:00)
8.Bishop's Countdown.(2:47)
9.Resolution and Hyperspace.(6:10)

The music on the CD is also not in the correct chronological order with respect to the movie. Here is some background information on the order that the music was 'meant' to be heard in the movie:
    1. Main Title
    7. Dark Discovery
    3. Sub-level 3
    5. Atmosphere Station
    4. Ripley's Rescue
    6. Futile Escape
    2. Going after Newt
    8. Bishop's Countdown
    9. Resolution and Hyperspace
Track 9, 'Resolution and Hyperspace', the beginning few minutes were not even used in the movie. However, it can be found in the film "Die Hard" near the end, and somewhat out of place. Michael Kamen composed the music for "Die Hard", but the director/producers choose to use the temp track for the film in that scene, which was 'Resolution and Hyperspace.'

The following summary of the ALIENS music swaps was written by "Victory Marasigan" in the rec.music.movies newsgroup in September of 1996. [Slightly updated by Nathan]
The final portion of 'Main Title' was written for the scavenger's discovery of Ripley's body in the narcissus, the Nostromo's lifeboat. It was instead played in a scene which can only be seen in the Special Edition. In the scene we get a brief introduction to the sulaco's empty maw, just before Ripley and the marines awaken.

It should be noted that only that last portion of 'Ripley's Rescue' was played in the film, during Ripley's rescue in the ATV. In the film, the action music from 'Futile Escape' was overlayed on the first part of Ripley's drive through the atmosphere processing station's tunnels.

'Dark Discovery' was supposed to be heard in an early part of the film (which was cut out, only to reappear in the aforementioned Special Edition version). The music underscores a scene where the Jordan family (Newt, mom, pop, and little Timmy) discover the derelict spacecraft from ALIEN.

'Futile Escape' was meant to only be heard during the aliens' attack on the marines near the end, but, as mentioned earlier, part of it ended up on the very first encounter the marines had with the creatures. Note that the first half of this track (mostly tension building percussion) is not in the film at all. However, if you play it along with the unscored movie, you can see that the music matches the action just before the aliens fall from the ceiling. the last part of the track (meant to be played as Ripley and co. crawl through the air ducts) is not heard in the film. Parts of 'Ripley's Rescue' are heard in the film instead.

Elliot Goldenthal picture Elliot Goldenthal composed the music to Alien 3. A relative newcomer at the time of this job, he has since won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and he has been nominated for a Grammy. Goldenthal has also been nominated and won numerous other soundtrack and music related awards. His work spans different styles, such as concert hall and theatre, while maintaining a certain contemporary flavour. Goldenthal has stated that "In ALIEN 3 it was composing music for the atmosphere and the environment." The music was not as conformist as its predecessors, but it was praised in some circles, such as Entertainment Weekly [7/24/92, p.56] stating that "..an industrial-dread symphony that comes at you in terrifying shards...literally sounds like nothing on earth.. - Rating: A-". One interesting addition to the film occured at the very start, where Goldenthal re-invented the end of the Fox Fanfare to better segue into the film. To listen to this track, just Click here.

This movie's music was also composed by Elliot Goldenthal. The peice occurs during the climax of the film. To listen to the section of music just click here (645KB, MP3 format). [Thanks go out to FoxFireJ2]

 -  The movie 'Cobb' also uses an entire track from Alien 3. Track 3 "The Beast Within" was included in the Cobb Soundtrack as well. This film was composed by Elliot Goldenthal.

 -  Muchmusic airs music videos in Canada. Every year they have a show 'Fromage' (french for 'cheese') featuring the best of the worst videos sent to them over the year. In 'Fromage 96', in one video the intro 'minute' of music was straight from the Alien 3 soundtrack. Serious copyright infringement. The video tried to go for an epic rap-video style but failed miserably. I can't remember what the artist or song was, but it did involve a pearl necklace being broken in the first minute if that rings any bells.....and yes, the Alien 3 soundtrack bit was the best part of the song.

 -  An Arm & Hammer TV commercial aired in 2000 used the "chimes" section of Track 1 (Agnus Dei) of the Alien 3 soundtrack. The sample was about a second long, and used twice in the 30 second commercial. So when you see an Arm & Hammer TV advertisment, listen very closely!

The Summary:
 -  Music from CD heard in Movie (20 segments): 44:23
 -  Music from CD I can't hear in the Movie (5 segments): 6:37
 -  Music in Movie not on the CD: (32 segments) : 32:34
 -  Total Alien 3 music known: 1:23:34

It is important to note that it is likely that most of the music that was on the Soundtrack CD but not heard in the theatrical release would likely fit in the Workprint/Assembly cut version. In the future I will examine the Assembly Cut (on the 2002 Alien 3 Quadrilogy Boxset release) to determine if that is fact.

Alien Resurrection Music Jump : Official | Bootleg

John Frizzell picture At age 31, John C. Frizzell was given the nod to compose the music for Alien Resurrection. Similar to Elliot Goldenthal, Frizzell had only limited experience composing motion picture scores before his Alien outing. The following is a snippet of an interview from SoundtrackNet, click their link for the full interview.

Tell me how you got to score Alien Resurrection.
I sent my music to Jean-Pierre Jeunet three times, and on the fourth time he called me back. I'm a huge fan of his work, and we hit it off, so I got the job!
There seems to be mixed feelings about the film and the score, mostly in the extremes for either case...
If you're going to do something different, you have to be prepared to take some criticism. I think the score presents some strong reactions - it definitely rocks the boat. If no one really cared either way, I might feel like a schmuck. Some people cherish the score and others loathe it - it's so polarized in either direction, which was absolutely thrilling to me. Jean-Pierre wanted something very different,we didn't want to do everything over again, and I think that's what was so successful about it. His European sensibilities played very heavily into the film, he was very specific about how you treat a picture with music. I was very pleased with the reaction to it, I just think that the people who complain about Hollywood making the same thing over and over are the same people who complain when Hollywood makes something different.
What would your dream project be?
I would love to work on a French film in France with Jean-Pierre Jeunet. There's talk of it. To spend a few months composing in Paris and eating snails around the clock, man, that would be great! So I may end up needing a new dream...

The guy said it all depends, if they get a lot of requests a Cd might be put out, or they might sell the music to people.

SalaciusCrumb reports with some info on an ALIEN Resurrection bootleg soundtrack, that contains all of John Frizzel's cues for the movie on 2 cds. It has a total time of 91 minutes and good sound quality. As Crumb notes: "Included is every score heard in the movie, except "Priva Son D'Ogni Conforto" from Handel which was played at the conversation scene between Elgyn and Perez. A special note deserves the beautiful piece "I'm a stranger here myself", the track for the final scene, which was missed on the RCA Victor release.

The Alien Trilogy is a collection of different cues from the first three Alien films. Although dominated by Jerry Goldsmith's Alien work, popular tracks from James Horner's Aliens, and Elliot GOldenthal's Alien 3 provide for a very good mix of the diverse music that populates the films.

 Miscellanous Music

 -  Elliot Goldenthal re-invented the end of the Fox Fanfare for the introduction to Alien 3. Click here to listen. (596KB, MP3 format).

 -  A "remix" of the 'rape' section of track 6 (Wreckage and Rape) can be found in the movie 'Titus.' This movie's music was also composed by Elliot Goldenthal. The peice occurs during the climax of the film. Click here to listen. (645KB, MP3 format). [Thanks go out to FoxFireJ2]
